Last season, REI waited until the _very_last_minute_ to announce that they would be running some special sales around Black Friday, but didn’t specifically label them as REI black friday sales. In 2011 we are expecting a similar strategy – a last minute announcement of a large-scale discount or temporary promotion that will only last for the duration of the weekend. That being said, it’s all speculation at this point.
One reason why REI is a great retailer to keep an eye on around Black Friday is that they seem to have a habit of enticing shoppers with brands that don’t typically see sales or discounts – ever – around Black Friday. We’ll see how things play out this year, but last year it was heavy discounts around TNF and Patagonia.

The winter sale happening right now is publicized for November 18-28 2011. Last year I think they did something similar where they publicized a longer sale without labeling it as a black friday sale, but there were a bunch of specials that came out on that friday – monday. Black friday at REI is always hit or miss but I’m hopeful.
REI on black Friday is a zoo near me in Denver. I’m not sure that it’s worth going to the store, even if the deals are good. Online sales are another story though…
