Skiing & Riding Films for 2010/2011

by Jeff on November 2, 2010

Another year, another great set of skiing and riding films that you can’t miss. If you aren’t in the habit of kicking your season off by seeing a premiere of a skiing or riding film on tour, you are really missing out. Here’s our list of the best picks for 2010/2011.

LIGHT THE WICK by Teton Gravity

ABOUT THE FILM: Teton Gravity’s skiing flick for 2010/2011, Light the Wick is a first of its kind – filmed in both HD and 3D. It features all of the staple scenes that make TGR films so great – a few heli trips, sweeping vistas of massive peaks in Petersburg, Alaska, and of course, some of skiing’s best athletes throwing themselves off cliffs. While I haven’t yet seen the 3D version, it looks AMAZING in HD. It’s an immersive experience like no film you’ve seen before, and I can only imagine what it’s like in 3D.
PLACES FEATURED: Petersburg Alaska, Croatia, Italy, British Columbia, Ripley Creek, Lake Frontier Heli, North Cascades Heli
HOW TO SEE IT: Light the Wick is available on DVD and iTunes – but you’d be doing yourself a real disservice if you don’t see it on tour, in 3D. Dates and information at tetongravity.com.

THE WAY I SEE IT by Matchstick Productions

ABOUT THE FILM: Matchstick really stepped up to the plate again this year with “The Way I See It”. The cinematography is unmatched, the deep powder shots are obviously plentiful, and the athletes featured are really an entertaining bunch. The film features a segment on a hut trip in BC that is a great summation of skiing and spending time with good friends.
PLACES FEATURED: British Columbia, Japan, Alaska, Colorado, Switzerland, Idaho, Washington, other locations
HOW TO SEE IT: The Way I See It is currently on tour, but many of the US dates have passed. A lot of what’s left is sold out, but it’s definitely worth checking out at skimovie.com.

DEEPER by Teton Gravity

ABOUT THE FILM: Deeper features an authentic big mountain experience – shots of amazing mountain vistas and Jeremy Jones on some stomach-churning lines, interspersed with some scary technical mountaineering. This is a must see for anyone who appreciates high mountains, deep backcountry, and all of the hard work that goes into riding in these amazing places.
PLACES FEATURED:Antarctica, Alaska, Europe, California, Utah.
HOW TO SEE IT:Deeper is available on DVD, but don’t miss out on seeing it while it’s on tour. Check out dates at tetongravity.com.

WORK IT OUT by Meathead Films

ABOUT THE FILM: Oh, the perils of being an East-coast skier. 2010 wasn’t a banner year by anyones’ standards, but the guys at Meathead films still managed to make one hell of an entertaining “East coast ski thriller”. The HD segments bring new life to some of the places that east coast skiers know and love, while the trips to DC and Japan (yes, Japan – can’t get much further east than that) are genuinely fun.
PLACES FEATURED: White Mountains, Maine, New Jersey, Hokkaido Japan
HOW TO SEE IT: The DVD is on preorder now, and the film is on tour around the Eastern United States. Check out meatheadfilms.com for dates and information.

WINTERVENTION by Warren Miller Entertainment

ABOUT THE FILM: This years’ Warren Miller film probably won’t dissapoint. After all, these guys have the resources and the budget to visit all of the skiing & riding destinations you dream about – and a bunch you’ve never heard of – in the pursuit of providing a steady stream of powder montages to the masses. The footage of heli skiing in Girdwood, Alaska looks amazing.
PLACES FEATURED: Arlberg region of Austria, Antarctica, Columbia Mountains of British Columbia, Vail, Gudari Georgia, New Zealand, Telluride, Southern Utah, Girdwood Alaska, Svalbard Norway.
HOW TO SEE IT: Wintervention is currently on tour, with dates spread across the country. Find one near you at warrenmiller.com. If you want something you can watch at home, last years’ Warren Miller flick “Dynasty” is now available via iTunes and Amazon.
